FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Western PA District Church of the Brethren, Hollsopple, Pennsylvania The Western PA District of the Church of the Brethren announces the calling of Abby R. Mader of Windber, PA, to the newly created position of District Children/Youth Ministries Coordinator. She will guide, counsel, and encourage district and local church workers in matters of children and youth ministry. Ms. Mader will be working at creating programs for the children and youth of the district and also working closely with the staff at Camp Harmony, Hooversville, PA.Ms. Mader is a 2001 graduate of Windber Area High School and a 2005 graduate of Grove City College with a bachelor’s degree in history education. She is also a licensed minister in the Western PA District Church of the Brethren. Ms. Mader is the daughter of Jay and the Rev. Ruby Mader of Windber. The District has its office near Jerome, PA. The Core Leadership Team is looking to call an individual to the position of DISTRICT CHILDREN/YOUTH MINISTRIES COORDINATOR. The need for this position was discussed by the Camp Harmony Board and the District Leadership Team, prior to the formation and approval of the Children, Youth & Outdoor Ministry Team by District Conference. The District Core Leadership Team has approved a Position Description for an emerging ministry need within the district. The Western Pennsylvania District held its 141th annual District Conference at Smith Hall/Ferguson Theater on the campus of the University of Pittsburgh in Greensburg, PA on Saturday, October 27, 2007. Moderator Reba B. Johnson of Indiana, PA, challenged the approximately 226 participants with the theme AYou are the Salt of the Earth...You are the Light of the World.@ Robert R. Stein of Chalk Hill was installed as moderator of the district for the next year. William A. Waugh of Greensburg was named moderator-designate. The district is comprised of 69 churches and one fellowship with a membership of over 9,500. The budget of $189,259 for 2008 was adopted by 194 delegates representing 53 congregations of the district, which has its office near Jerome. Insight sessions were held in the morning. The subjects included: an overview of the work of two agencies of the denomination, the General Board and Brethren Benefit Trust; a presentation about the mission work of the denomination=s Sudan Initiative; and a presentation about the work of Camp Harmony, the district=s camp facility. Worship and music were interspersed throughout the business of the day. A highlight of the conference was an auction of three hours of District Minister Ronald Beachley=s time. This was done to encourage attendance at the District=s second annual auction that took place on November 3. Congregations and individuals also brought enough AGift of the Heart@ Kits to send a van load to Church World Service Center in New Windsor, Maryland. Twelve persons were called to three-year terms on the district leadership team. They are David A. Baker, Grampian; AnnaBelle Coleman, Berlin; Janice Kaltenbaugh, Friedens; Linda L Reininger, Johnstown; Patti Shaulis, Meyersdale; Larry E. Walker, East McKeesport; Mildred Z. Hartzell, Somerset; Phillip A. King, Johnstown; Homer H. Marshall, Masontown; Guy L. Myers, Johnstown; Shirley Baker, Greensburg; and Gary N. Weaver, Central City. Myrna P. Baer of Friedens was called to a three-year term as a delegate to the denomination=s Annual Conference Standing Committee. Charles B. Statler of Windber was named to a five-year term on the Board of Trustees for Brethren Home Community Windber. Called to three-year terms on the board of directors of Camp Harmony located near Hooversville were John E. Eash, Hollsopple; Linda L. Reininger, Johnstown; and Patti Shaulis, Meyersdale. Two persons were called to serve four-year terms on the district=s gifts discernment team. They are Bertha Hironimus of Ligonier, and Patricia M. Marshall of Masontown.
